UEFA Champions League™ 2006-2007 In Depth

UEFA Champions League. The mere mention of one of football’s greatest tournaments conjures up memories of tense night time matches between some of the finest teams in Europe.

This year the official game of the UEFA Champions League is the most authentic game based on the most exciting club tournament in football.

The game is steeped in the history of the tournament. You can play 42 of the best matches from the history of the UEFA Champions League, though for licensing reason this is done with modern teams. These matches go all the way back to the 60s, including the legendary Celtic - Milan match-up that saw Celtic become the first British team to win the European Cup. There is also a history book feature which has details of the fastest goal, biggest win and so on – it’s then up to you to beat these records in a match! Speaking of history, the commentators will also mention plenty of facts from past matches.

The teams included this year are all the current UEFA Champions League teams as well as the top teams in England, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. There are a few other big name teams such as CSKA Moscow and Eindhoven though these are not officially licensed this time. The rosters will be accurate as of the close of the January transfer window.

While there are plenty of officially licensed teams to play you can also create your own, a feature called Ultimate Team. This is not done with a boring list or anything, far from it. Instead it’s done with a unique trading cards system. You start off with a fairly average selection of players and also get cards for keeper coaches, managers, physios and so on. There are also cards for boots and balls. In addition to cards that represent people you can get cards to play mid-match. These can bolster your team’s stamina or speed, lower the moral of the enemy team and plenty besides. You can even run the clock down with one card! This all might sound a little unfair, but both sides have these cards plus it’s all been carefully balanced to make sure that playing a good game of football comes first.

There are three tiers of card packs; bronze, silver and gold, though you’ll have to work your way up to accessing the gold packs. You can also get the “golden Ticket” by completing the top level of the Ultimate Team mode. This allows you to enter a snapshot of your built up team into the UEFA Champions League itself to compete against the finest in Europe.
